Heavenly Treasures

Last night I excitedly told my wife Karen “The news says we might be able to see the aurora borealis this weekend! Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are expected to produce a Severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm Watch.” I continued reading: “Although there could be threats to our communications and power grid this could be a unique opportunity in Tennessee to view this heavenly phenomenon. I learned that ‘The best aurora is usually between 10 pm and 2 am. Experts recommend taking a photo of the night sky with your cell phone – you never know what you may capture. Things that the human eye can’t see, your phone can.”

“Why not?” I put on a sweatshirt, some warm pants and stepped out on our deck and looked towards the north. I could see the moon and some stars but no aurora borealis. Nevertheless, I took a few photos with my iPhone. I walked back inside disappointed that there was nothing that I could see.

“But wait!” I exclaimed, “Look at the third picture. Do you think the aurora is starting to appear?”

We went back out on the porch and began to see, with our naked eyes, this magnificent unfolding beauty.

“So—who is like me? Who holds a candle to me?” says The Holy One.
"Look at the night skies: Who do you think made all this?" Isaiah 40: 25

When I gaze to the skies and meditate on Your creation— on the moon, stars, and all You have made......I can’t help but wonder Ps 8: 3-4
The celestial realms announce God’s glory; the skies testify of His hands’ great work.
Each day pours out more of their sayings; each night, more to hear and more to learn.
Inaudible words are their manner of speech, and silence, their means to convey. Psalm 27

We could have missed this phenomenal experience if we hadn’t taken the time to be curious and look outside! It’s easy to be so caught up in the myriad of distractions and obligations of our daily lives that we don’t take the time to be still and quiet our hearts…..sometimes we are unexpectedly surprised!

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand]. Ps 91
